Why join a group?
Human beings have always lived in social groups – family, peer, work and so on. It would be fair to say that for most of us our happiness and our success depend upon the quality of our relationships within those groups. A group provides an ideal setting in which to gain new insights into yourself and your relationships, whether in your personal or working life. It is quite natural to feel some anxiety about joining a group. However, after the initial apprehension, most people find a group to be a supportive and empowering environment and experience relief at finding that they are not alone with their problem.
Joining a group will give you the opportunity to talk about and explore personal issues in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. It is based on the understanding that much of the distress we feel and the symptoms we experience result from the way we have learned, through life experiences, to relate to others.
In our daily lives we are constantly bombarded with demands for our time and attention whether at home or at work. In joining a group you are allowing yourself the time and space to reflect upon and talk about your experiences in a supportive environment and to develop your capacity for happiness, success and personal fulfilment.
Through taking part in the experience of a group you will gain new insights into yourself, your feelings and your relationships. You will be encouraged to explore your thoughts and experiences. Through this you will come to understand how past patterns of behaviour can adversely affect current relationships and block growth and personal fulfilment.
As well as being able to talk about things happening outside the group, the conductor will help group members to learn more about themselves by observing and reflecting on how members relate to each other within the group itself. Joining a group works for a variety of difficulties and life situations. Anxiety, low self-esteem, problems with relationships and stress are typical problems for which a group might be recommended. It may also be helpful to those who suffer from the effects of loss or childhood trauma. However, group psychotherapy does not only address difficult life experiences but is also concerned with learning about the self and uncovering undeveloped aspirations and creativity.
